Eyeglass Recycling Program

For 314 million people in developing countries, something as simple as a pair of used eyeglasses can mean the difference between drowning in poverty or providing for their families.

Eyeglass Recycling has been a signature project for Lions Clubs across the country for more than 70 years. The Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation supports the Lions in this cause by serving as a collection and distribution center for recycled eyeglasses. The Foundation receives over 80,000 pairs of eyeglasses annually.

How Does Eyeglass Recycling Work?

Donated eyeglasses are brought to the Foundation through several channels - one pair, a box or sometimes an entire truck full. Lion volunteers help sort the glasses by type, which the Foundation then provides to philanthropic groups.

Where Do the Recycled Glasses Go?

After they are sorted and cleaned, humanitarian groups or individuals will transport the glasses on mission trips for distribution overseas . The Foundation has sent more than 500,000 pairs of donated glasses to developing countries from Russia to the Amazon.

Why Can't My Donated Glasses be Distributed in the U.S.?

Due to federal regulations, eyeglasses can only be prescribed by a eye care specialist after a thorough eye examination. Because of the lack of medical care in third world countries, your donated eyeglasses may be an individual's only chance at regaining his or her lost vision.

Where Do I Donate My Old Eyeglasses?

Lions throughout the country are dedicated to improving eyesight around the world. Contact you local Lions Club to contribute your old glasses to the Eyeglass Recycling program. You may also send your donated eyeglasses directly to:

Glasses of all types are welcome, including sunglasses, which are sent to countries on the Equator to protect against cataracts caused by sun damage.
